VCDS RL Adapter - GAL chip

Dear all,

the latest clone adpater are all coming with RL chips (ChipID feature). Specifically for the RL version, when reflash the Atmega Eeprom, it is always said to also reflash the GAL chip in opposite to the older BM adapters. I thought the GAL is mainly for the K/I Lines. So why do they need to be reflashed as well, and why only with RL adapters and not the BM ones ?
